Exalead Brings Search By Serendipity Experience to iPhone Users

Exalead, a global provider of search software for business and the web, announced that it has released an optimized version of its web search engine that is specifically designed for use with the Apple iPhone. Available now, Apple iPhone users can simply point their web browsers to i.exalead.com for instant access to Exalead's web search engine, including its recently introduced vertical search applications for video, images and Wikipedia. Exalead's web search engine complies with the display specifications of the Apple iPhone screen so that users don't need to "zoom in" to clearly see search results or scroll horizontally to see the rest of the webpage. The Exalead iPhone-adapted web search handles online video searches from popular sources like YouTube. When users click on a video search result, the Exalead web search engine automatically identifies the format to offer a full-screen viewing experience.

Conversational search

Teragram has announced a new service that allows users to create, access and share personalized information through the Web, cell phone text message or IM chat. The company explains that MyGADs is a conversational system that lets its members "talk" to select applications--such as a calendar--either on a mobile device or online.

Users interact with the system by entering natural language queries into a chat window. The upgrade allows enterprise users to download a new BlackBerry application for MyGADs that installs the program directly on to their mobile device, eliminating the need to connect to a mobile Web browser.

The version includes a new online user interface, which consists of icons (widgets) that represent customizable GAD applications. Examples of available applications include a to-do list, calendar, calculator, blog hosting engine, Web page editor or notepad. Using these applications, MyGADs members can store and retrieve their own personal information, connect to outside applications, such as Microsoft Exchange and SharePoint, and search pre-loaded databases for localized weather, calculators/conversions, encyclopedia definitions, etc.

Accelerating the drug discovery process

To help discover, analyze and share scientific information, Laboratoires Fournier is deploying a text analytics solution. The French affiliate of Solvay Pharmaceuticals will use TEMIS' Luxid for Life Sciences software in its attempt to meet medical needs in several therapeutic areas.

Sébastien Vachenc, bioinformatician at Laboratoires Fournier’s Exploratory Biology Unit (EBU) Department, says, "We decided to implement the solution in our drug discovery process in order to facilitate an up-to-date synthesis and sharing of scientific information extracted by means of three Skill Cartridges dedicated to relationships of biological, medical and chemical entities, and we are currently working with TEMIS on the development of a specific Skill Cartridge for biomarkers discovery. We are convinced of the valuable contribution of this text mining approach to the search for validated and potential biomarkers."

The text analytics solution is intended to accelerate the identification of biomarkers by enabling targeted and efficient knowledge extraction from the growing volume of biomedical literature, TEMIS reports in a recent press release.

In 2005, Laboratoires Fournier and TEMIS embarked on a pilot project that led to adoption of the technology in various studies. Now, Laboratoires Fournier wants to apply the text analytics solution to highlight a selection of potential biomarker candidates before the pre-clinical studies. The Biological and Medical Skill Cartridges are used for the biomarkers project to detect specific relationships between diseases and proteins.

Knowledge plus search equals power

Sterling Commerce, a subsidiary of AT&T, has chosen an integrated platform from Inquira to improve customer service. The company will use InQuira 8 to integrate its knowledgebase with its search capabilities to enhance problem resolution for online customers and call center support representatives.

According to a recent press release from InQuira, the integrated platform includes its: Information Manager, with which Sterling can create new solution articles for the knowledgebase; Intelligent Search, which provides search and retrieval features to resolve customer problems better; and Analytics, which allows management to evaluate the user experience and make improvements.

"We surveyed our support representatives and customers, and listened to their concerns. The message was clear. They found it difficult to find the information they knew existed in the knowledgebase, and customers wanted better search capabilities on our support site," says Doug Olson, VP of global support at Sterling Commerce.

Olson continues, "We realized, though, that search on its own will not provide our agents and customers with the fulfilling support experience we want to deliver. Search needs quality knowledge content to be effective, and quality knowledge content has limited value without an effective way to retrieve it. We need a tightly integrated knowledgebase and search solution to really deliver on the expectations of our customers. InQuira 8 gives us that solution."
