Searching for Social at Enterprise Search Summit West
This year's Enterprise Search Summit West was a bit different than previous years; aligned closely with the co-located KMWorld program, the more streamlined conference allowed search-focused attendees to take full advantage of the three day event or to maximize their knowledge seeking across the larger KMWorld conference. Held November 17-19 in San Jose, Calif., the summit covered everything from federated and semantic search, to the topic people just can't seem to stop talking about: social search.

Integrating Security into Your Enterprise Search Infrastructure
The proliferation and increasing power of enterprise search requires companies to pay more attention than ever before to the protection of confidential information. They can no longer assume that what they thought was private is,in fact, protected.Today, companies must carefully reconsider document and information security issues, whether to protect intellectual property rights, undisclosed strategies (everything from new products to new partners to layoffs), and employee privacy for personal information where they are the fiduciary such as medical, retirement, and personnel data.

Google Launches Site Search Service for Business
Millions of businesses have a Web presence but offer users no ability to search their site. While many of these businesses invest in search advertising and search engine optimization to help customers find their business, customers are left on their own to navigate content once they land on a site. With remote hosted search (Software as a Service, or SaaS), sites can add a search field to each page; when a user types a query, the form sends it to the search service, which retrieves matching pages from that site stored in the index and returns a results list to the site. Search engine consultant Avi Rappaport reports on Google's foray into the space, with a service starting at only $100 for sites with less than 5000 pages to be indexed.

Reading Between the Lines: Kindle vs. iPad
Being the owner of two of the most important e-readers on the market puts me in a unique position to speak to the best and the worst of what e-readers have to offer. In my view, the Kindle - iPad comparisons I have read are usually based on a rather arrogant assumption: that reading books is, somehow, a more worthwhile intellectual pursuit than magazines, newspapers, or other content sources.
